ALAN DAVIES: “JENNIFER ANISTON CHATTED ME UP”

Comedian and actor Alan Davies has shared a surprising story about a missed romantic opportunity, claiming that Friends star Jennifer Aniston once “tried to seduce” him back in 1997.

Speaking on Katherine Ryan’s What’s My Age Again? podcast, the QI regular recalled the chance meeting with Hollywood royalty during a Royal Gala event celebrating 21 years of The Prince’s Trust, an encounter that could have been the start of something special, if not for one hilariously awkward misstep.

Alan explained how, at the time, Friends was at the height of its fame and Jennifer Aniston was one of the most recognisable faces on the planet, adored for her role as Rachel Green and her effortless charm.

“She wore this kind of gown with spaghetti straps and this flawless skin and beautiful face and the hair,” Davies said, clearly still in awe nearly 30 years later. “I did a bit of stand-up about my dog and she approached me at the aftershow party, I imagined that she was going to go past me and speak to someone behind me, and she said that she liked dogs.”

That’s when things went wrong.

“And I sort of… it was as if I’d had a stroke or something,” he admitted. “I just thought, she wants to chat about dogs.”

Rather than seizing the moment, Alan, who was then a rising star in British comedy, completely missed the flirtatious tone of the interaction.

Reflecting on the encounter, he now believes Jennifer’s approach may have been more than just friendly conversation:

“Of course, what she was trying to do was seduce me. She’d chosen me, of all the people in the party, to approach, someone who was about the right age, approximately the right size for her, sense of humour, dog lover, hair… she thought, ‘While I’m here in London, he could be the one for me.’”

Unfortunately, rather than making a romantic impression, Alan said he quickly derailed the moment in classic British fashion.

“And then what I did was I introduced her to the cast of Coronation Street.”

The audience and Katherine Ryan burst into laughter as Davies recounted how he accidentally turned what might have been a once-in-a-lifetime flirtation into a painfully awkward social moment.

Fans online have since shared their amusement at the story, calling it “the most Alan Davies thing ever” and praising his self-deprecating honesty.

Jennifer Aniston, who at the time was newly single following her rise to fame on Friends, has yet to comment on Alan’s version of events, but the tale has certainly captured public imagination.

While the world will never know what might have been between the British comic and the American sitcom icon, Davies’ anecdote adds a light-hearted chapter to both their histories, and proves that even celebrities can completely misread the room when it comes to romance.
