Alarm as floor collapses in a Tenerife police station

An unexpected incident at the Santa Cruz Local Police Station in Tenerife has raised new questions about the condition of the building, despite assurances from previous inspections.

Late on Monday night (21st April), following a loud noise the floor of the changing rooms collapsed, alarming officers at the station located in the old La Financiera building on Avenida Tres de Mayo.

According to police reports, officers discovered shattered tiles across the locker area shortly after the noise was heard. Firefighters and municipal technicians arrived at the scene the following day to inspect the damage.

While the exact cause of the collapse remains undetermined, early indications suggest it may have been due to thermal expansion or the weight of the lockers on the floor. A full technical report is currently pending to confirm the cause.

Although the CSIF union has repeatedly called for the relocation of the station, due to concerns over health and safety because of the building’s deteriorating condition, the structure has previously been deemed suitable for use. A report issued last year by the Santa Cruz Council concluded that the building met operational standards and showed no signs of structural compromise.

Discussions about relocating the station have been going on for more than a decade, though no decision has yet been made. In the meantime, the Council maintains its focus on improving the existing premises to ensure continued service, while also acknowledging the growing pressure to find a long-term solution.
