Amazon Prime subscribers have uncovered a hidden gem, and it’s turning Easter weekend into a full-blown binge-fest. The Disappearance, an overlooked French crime drama, has suddenly become the streaming platform’s must-watch series, with viewers calling it “gripping,” “nerve-shredding,” and “one of the best” thrillers around.
Originally broadcast in France back in 2015 and later airing quietly on BBC Four, The Disappearance follows the intense investigation into the vanishing of 17-year-old Léa (played by Emily in Paris star Camille Razat), who disappears after a music festival in Lyon. What unfolds is a complex, suspenseful web of secrets, lies, and family dynamics that has left viewers glued to their screens.
Despite being nearly a decade old, the eight-part series has found new life on Prime, and fans can’t stop recommending it.
“One of the best crime dramas on TV,” viewer Al Butt wrote on Google. “You just have to read subtitles, but it’s well worth it.”
Another fan, Alan Sharp, agreed: “Excellent. Binge-watching is a strain on your nerves! Don’t think you know what really happened until the very end.”
Chrissie Harrison echoed the praise: “Gripping from start to end with plenty of twists and turns,” while Mary Raffaele added: “Great show, highly recommend! Every episode leaves you in suspense.”

With a taut plot and gritty, character-driven storytelling, The Disappearance has drawn comparisons to iconic Scandi noirs like The Killing. Yet, fans argue the French are proving just as masterful in the crime drama genre.
The show’s renewed popularity comes alongside a wider surge of interest in French thrillers on streaming platforms. The Returned, a haunting supernatural series about the dead reappearing in a remote Alpine town, is also winning praise.
“TheReturned was excellent. I’m calling it an ‘Alp-spine chiller’,” joked X user Tiernan Douieb, while writer Toby Whithouse raved: “The Returned was amazing! Creepy and beautiful. Such a delight.”
Another recent Prime thriller, Fear, has been described as a “terrifying emotional rollercoaster.” Starring Line of Duty’s Martin Compston and Anjli Mohindra, it tells the story of a couple blindsided by sinister accusations from a new neighbour.
“Geesh, that was a terrifying emotional rollercoaster & great twist too. Loved every minute,” said one viewer. Another called it “bloody brilliant” and gave it “five stars.”
So, if you’re looking for your next edge-of-your-seat binge-watch, don’t sleep on The Disappearance. Just don’t blame us if you find yourself staying up all night to finish it.
