Brandon Blackstock, music manager and ex-husband of singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson, has sadly passed away at the age of 48, following a private three-year battle with cancer.
A spokesperson for the family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement shared with People magazine:
“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
The announcement comes less than 24 hours after Clarkson revealed she was cancelling her upcoming Las Vegas residency, citing a serious private illness within her family.
“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,” Clarkson wrote in a message to fans via her Instagram story.
“I appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding.”
Although she did not name Blackstock directly or disclose the nature of his illness at the time, the tragic news has now shed light on her decision to step back from work commitments.

A quiet battle behind the scenes
Blackstock, who was once a well-known figure in the entertainment industry, had kept his illness out of the public eye. For over three years, he privately endured treatment while continuing to co-parent the two young children he shared with Clarkson: River Rose, 10, and Remington, 8.
Despite their high-profile divorce in 2020, Clarkson and Blackstock remained committed to their children’s well-being, navigating their split with as much privacy as possible.
A career in music management
Blackstock was a respected talent manager in Nashville and Los Angeles, having represented artists including Blake Shelton, and previously working alongside his former wife Kelly Clarkson during their marriage.
He was also the former stepson of country music icon Reba McEntire, through his father Narvel Blackstock’s marriage to the superstar. Reba has yet to publicly comment on his passing.
In recent years, Blackstock had stepped away from the spotlight, moving to Montana to live a quieter life following the high-profile end to his marriage.
Tributes pouring in
Fans and fellow artists alike have begun posting tributes online, offering condolences to Clarkson and the Blackstock family.
Although Clarkson has yet to release a public statement beyond her Instagram message, many have praised her strength and grace during what must have been a profoundly challenging time.
