Get ready to fall in love all over again, 10 Things I Hate About You is officially heading to Broadway. The iconic 1999 teen rom-com, which launched the careers of Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is getting a musical makeover, and the team behind it is nothing short of A-list.
As reported by Billboard, the stage adaptation is being brought to life by an impressive creative lineup, with pop sensation Carly Rae Jepsen and Girls creator Lena Dunham at the helm of its musical and narrative reinvention. Jepsen, known for her chart-topping hits and theatre roots, will co-write the show’s score alongside acclaimed singer, songwriter, and producer Ethan Gruska.
Lena Dunham, no stranger to writing smart, emotionally charged female leads, will co-pen the book for the musical with playwright Jessica Huang. The pairing of Dunham’s razor-sharp wit and Huang’s rich storytelling background promises a fresh and thoughtful take on the modern-day Shakespearean tale.
Based on The Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You became a defining film for a generation, mixing clever humour, teen angst, and romance in equal measure. Its transition to Broadway is already generating major buzz, with theatre fans and movie lovers alike eager to see how the beloved story of Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona will play out on stage, and in song.
The production’s pedigree doesn’t stop there. The musical will be directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Christopher Wheeldon, known for his dazzling work on An American in Paris and MJ: The Musical. Music supervision is in the expert hands of Tom Kitt, whose credits include Next to Normal and If/Then. Rounding out the powerhouse team is veteran producer Mike Bosner, best known for the smash hit Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
While casting and opening dates are yet to be announced, the buzz surrounding the project suggests this will be one of Broadway’s hottest tickets. With a killer creative team, a story that still resonates, and a soundtrack in the works that’s sure to blend heart and humour, 10 Things I Hate About You: The Musical is set to steal hearts all over again, this time, under the bright lights of the Great White Way.
