Pop rebel Charli XCX is diving deeper into the world of film, and this time, she’s teaming up with one of Japan’s most iconic and boundary-pushing directors, Takashi Miike.
According to a new report from Variety, the Speed Drive singer will not only star in Miike’s upcoming project but also serve as a producer, marking an exciting new chapter in her rapidly expanding creative career. While full plot details remain tightly under wraps, the film is being written by Ross Evans, the screenwriter behind Robert Pattinson’s How to Save a Marriage.
Charli’s move into cinema has been gaining momentum, but this collaboration is easily her boldest yet. Takashi Miike, known internationally for his cult classics like Audition (1999) and Ichi the Killer (2001), has built a legendary career out of crafting films that push boundaries, blend genres, and often leave audiences breathless. With over 100 directing credits to his name, Miike’s style is unpredictable, visceral, and revered by horror aficionados around the globe.
Though primarily recognised for extreme horror and violent thrillers, Miike’s work also spans action, drama, and even children’s films, making the creative pairing with Charli XCX all the more intriguing. Known for her fearless pop experimentation and unapologetic attitude, Charli seems well-matched to Miike’s unorthodox filmmaking style.
This isn’t Charli’s first foray into film, she’s already had success in music for screen projects, including contributions to soundtracks and performances on screen. But this new venture could position her as a genuine force in the cinematic world, both in front of and behind the camera.
Neither Charli nor Miike have commented publicly on the project yet, and no title or release date has been announced, but anticipation is already building. For fans of both boundary-breaking pop and fearless filmmaking, this collaboration is one to watch closely.
If Charli XCX’s genre-defying music career is anything to go by, her leap into a Takashi Miike film could be every bit as wild, dark, and unforgettable.
