Controversial R&B star Chris Brown has been released on £5 million bail following his arrest over a violent bottle attack that allegedly took place at a London nightclub in 2023. Despite the severity of the charge, the 35-year-old singer has been granted permission to continue his international tour, thanks to a complex legal arrangement approved by the court.
Brown, who jetted into the UK on a private plane, was arrested last Thursday by Greater Manchester Police at the luxurious Lowry Hotel in Salford, where he was staying ahead of a tour date. The arrest stems from an incident at Tape London in Mayfair in February 2023, where Brown is accused of causing grievous bodily harm to music producer Abe Diaw in what prosecutors described as a bottle attack.
In court, it was revealed that the singer’s passport will be held by lawyers and police and only made available when travel is required to fulfil tour commitments across Europe, the US, and Canada. Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe KC explained that Brown must reside at a UK address during the bail period and adhere to the strict conditions set by the court.
The high-profile nature of the case and the star’s global fame have turned the arrest into international news, fuelling heated debate online. While fans continue to support the singer, critics have raised concerns over the optics of allowing someone facing such a serious charge to continue performing on tour.
Brown’s legal history is well-documented, with several high-profile incidents over the years, most notably his 2009 felony assault conviction involving then-girlfriend Rihanna. Despite this, the artist has maintained a successful music career, regularly topping charts and selling out arenas worldwide.
This latest charge threatens to cast a long shadow over his current tour, which has been heavily promoted and features major stops across multiple continents. There is no official word yet from Brown’s legal team or representatives, but sources suggest the singer is determined to honour all upcoming performances.
Chris Brown will return to court at a later date, with legal proceedings now underway. As the case develops, the music world will be watching closely to see whether this marks another chapter in the artist’s long-running saga of controversy and comebacks.
