Two decades after it stunned global audiences and took home multiple Oscars, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is set to leap back into the spotlight, this time as a high-stakes television series.
Amazon Prime Video has officially announced that a new small-screen adaptation is in development, based on Wang Dulu’s original novel of the same name. The upcoming series will reimagine the world made famous by Ang Lee’s 2000 cinematic masterpiece, which starred Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun-fat, and Zhang Ziyi, and became a landmark moment in martial arts and world cinema.
The TV version promises to blend sweeping visuals with intense emotion and spectacular action, staying true to the story’s roots while offering a fresh perspective for both returning fans and newcomers alike. According to the synopsis, the series will follow the journey of Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two warriors torn between honour and desire, as they grapple with their forbidden love in the face of a changing world. Against the backdrop of ancient China’s breathtaking landscapes, the show will explore the tension between tradition and transformation, duty and personal freedom.
Jason Ning, best known for his work on Netflix’s The Brothers Sun (which also featured Michelle Yeoh), has been tapped as writer and executive producer. While The Brothers Sun was recently cancelled, Ning's work on that series drew praise for its dynamic storytelling and action, making him a strong fit for Crouching Tiger’s ambitious revival.
Ang Lee’s original film, which took inspiration from Wang Dulu’s "Crane-Iron" novel series, was a critical and commercial triumph, winning four Academy Awards and redefining how martial arts could be portrayed on screen. With its lyrical storytelling, stunning wire-fu choreography, and poignant emotional core, it became a cultural touchstone, now considered one of the most influential films of its kind.
The upcoming series is expected to retain the elegance, philosophy, and emotional depth that made the film a global sensation, while expanding the narrative across a longer, more immersive format. No casting has been confirmed yet, and it’s unclear whether original stars like Michelle Yeoh might return in any capacity.
Still, anticipation is already building for what could be one of the most visually striking and emotionally resonant TV projects in the pipeline. For fans of martial arts epics, forbidden love stories, and timeless mythology, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is ready to fly again.
