Strictly Come Dancing stars Dianne Buswell and Joe Sugg have shared an exciting new update about their pregnancy, revealing that they’ve already chosen a “unique” name for their unborn baby boy.
The couple, who first met on the BBC dance show in 2018, announced earlier this year that they were expecting their first child together, making Dianne the first-ever pregnant professional dancer in Strictly history.
Now, the pair have opened up in a new YouTube video about life as expectant parents, teasing fans with hints about the baby’s name, but keeping the real one a closely guarded secret.
Joe, who found fame as one of YouTube’s biggest British creators before swapping screens for the Strictly dance floor, told viewers:
“The name that we’ve come up with, we’re not going to share it. We can’t really give any clues to it other than I don’t really see this name really anywhere.”
He went on to explain that while the name is rare, it’s not completely outlandish, and that it can double as both a first name and a surname.
“I know some people who have it as their surname, but it’s also the sort of name that can be shortened. I’d say it’s quite a unique name but not unique as in, you know… Apple or Pear,” he laughed, referencing celebrity baby name trends.
Interrupting him, Dianne chimed in with a laugh:
“It’s kind of like Joe, isn’t it? Cute when you’re little, and you can call yourself Joseph when you’re older.”
Joe continued:
“Or it could be a good sportsperson name. I’ve purposefully not said it out loud at all, whereas Dianne keeps calling him by that name. I do feel like between now and our due date, which is another thing I don’t think we’re going to share, we might end up revealing it by accident.”
Then, with his trademark sense of humour, Joe teased fans by saying:
“From now on, he’s called… Derek.”
The moment sparked a flurry of excitement (and laughter) in the comments, with fans rushing to congratulate the couple while guessing what the real name might be.
The pair have been open about their journey to parenthood, frequently posting light-hearted videos and vlogs about pregnancy life. Dianne, who continues to share upbeat dance clips and glowing selfies on Instagram, recently said that she feels “incredibly lucky” to be experiencing motherhood with Joe by her side.
“It’s such a special time in our lives,” she said in a recent post. “We can’t wait to meet our little one, he’s already kicking up a storm!”
The Strictly couple have been together for nearly seven years after being partnered on the show in 2018. Their chemistry on the dance floor quickly turned into a real-life romance, and they’ve since become one of the most loved success stories in the show’s history.
Fans have flooded social media with excitement at the news of their baby boy, and with Joe hinting that his name is both “unique” and “sporty,” it’s only a matter of time before the big reveal.
Until then, “Baby Derek” seems to be the nickname sticking around, at least for now.
