Daniel O’Donnell to Headline Star-Studded Fundraiser

Beloved Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell is rallying support for a cherished place of worship in his native Donegal, headlining a special benefit concert to raise funds for the rebuilding of St Mary’s Church in Derrybeg, Gaoth Dobhair, which was tragically destroyed in a mysterious fire.

The iconic octagonal-shaped church was reduced to a smouldering shell after flames tore through the building in the early hours of Monday morning. While no injuries were reported, the blaze has left the local community devastated, and questions still hang over its cause. Gardaí and forensic experts remain at the scene, meticulously combing through the ruins as investigations continue.

In response to the tragedy, the local community, supported by some of Ireland’s best-known musical talent, has moved swiftly into action. A GoFundMe campaign launched earlier this week has already surpassed €40,000, a testament to the strong emotional and cultural ties the church holds within the region and among the diaspora.

Now, efforts will be bolstered even further with a concert tonight at Teach Phaídí Óig in Crolly, where Daniel O’Donnell will be joined by an all-star lineup of performers in a show of solidarity and support.

Among those joining him are Moya Brennan of the legendary group Clannad, and Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh, founding member of acclaimed traditional band Altan, both hailing from the area and deeply connected to its cultural fabric. Their participation ensures the event will be not only a fundraiser but a poignant celebration of local spirit and heritage.

Speaking about the tragedy, O’Donnell expressed his sorrow and commitment to helping however he can. “St Mary’s has always been such a special place for so many people, including myself. It’s heartbreaking to see the devastation, but I know this community will rebuild, stronger than ever.”

Tonight’s concert is expected to draw a large crowd, with locals and supporters from across Ireland coming together in a powerful demonstration of community resilience and faith.

For many in Gaoth Dobhair, the loss of the church is deeply personal, a place of baptisms, weddings, and final farewells, and the rebuilding effort is about more than restoring a building; it’s about restoring hope.

With music as the unifying force, this weekend’s concert is poised to be a moving moment of healing, and a strong step forward on the road to recovery.
