After more than three decades on air, the curtain is finally coming down on E! News, the show that became a household name for celebrity gossip, red carpet coverage, and breaking entertainment headlines.
NBCUniversal’s entertainment arm Versant has announced that the final broadcast of E! News will air on September 25, officially ending the programme’s storied 32-year run.
Launched in 1991, E! News quickly became the go-to source for Hollywood happenings, pop culture buzz, and exclusive interviews. From covering red carpet arrivals at the Oscars to announcing baby bumps and breakups, the programme shaped how entertainment journalism was consumed globally.
Throughout its run, the show launched or cemented the careers of some of showbiz’s most recognisable hosts, including Joan Rivers, Ryan Seacrest, Maria Menounos, Guiliana Rancic, and Terrence J. Its irreverent tone, fast-paced format, and access to the A-list made it an entertainment powerhouse for years.
However, the programme’s fortunes began to wane in the last decade, as celebrity coverage evolved and audiences shifted to digital and social platforms. The COVID-19 pandemic dealt another major blow, forcing E! News to go on hiatus in 2020.
While the brand attempted a reboot in 2022 as a late-night programme rather than its traditional primetime slot, it failed to regain its earlier momentum. The revamped format featured a shorter runtime and a focus on fast-turnaround stories, but struggled in the ratings.
According to sources within NBCUniversal, the decision to cancel the show is part of a wider strategy to consolidate entertainment reporting under digital brands and streaming-first formats. E! News content will continue online via E! Online and other platforms, but the TV broadcast era will officially end this September.
“It’s the end of an era,” said one former host. “E! News was the blueprint for entertainment television. Everyone tuned in to find out what was happening in Hollywood, and it made stars out of its presenters.”
Viewers and media figures have already begun paying tribute to the show on social media, remembering its signature red carpet interviews, cheeky headlines, and unforgettable fashion coverage.
While the TV programme may be wrapping up, E! News leaves behind a legacy that helped define the genre of celebrity news and brought Hollywood into millions of living rooms around the world.
