Sir Elton John is officially returning to the stage, and in spectacular fashion. The music legend has been announced as the first headliner for Rock in Rio 2026, marking a monumental moment for both the festival and fans worldwide. Set for September 7, 2026, his appearance will take place on the festival’s iconic Palco Mundo (World Stage), in what is confirmed to be his only scheduled performance in Brazil.
The announcement, made today (November 25), has electrified fans who feared they might never see Elton perform live again. After completing his colossal ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour in July 2023, a run he proclaimed would be his last, many assumed the superstar’s touring days were firmly behind him. With more than 300 shows across five years, it became the highest-grossing tour of all time, and an emotional goodbye to the road for the now 78-year-old icon.
However, Elton never fully closed the door on future performances. While confirming he would retire from full touring, he hinted that he was open to doing “the odd show”, a reassurance that kept fans hopeful. Now, with Rock in Rio’s announcement, that hope has become a reality, and Elton John is officially back for a rare, career-defining moment.
Roberto Medina, the visionary creator and president of Rock in Rio, shared emotional praise for the star, emphasising the significance of the booking.
“Rock in Rio was born to create unforgettable memories. We’re not just bringing Elton John back, we’re bringing a living legend,” he said.
“Having him on our World Stage is an honour. His journey, legacy, and the power of his music embody everything Rock in Rio stands for: emotion, connection, and the transformative force of art.”
This will mark Elton’s first performance in Rio in nearly a decade, and anticipation is already soaring. Rock in Rio is famed for its world-class production, emotional atmosphere, and the passionate Brazilian crowd, elements perfectly aligned with Elton’s theatrical and deeply personal musical style.
Elton himself expressed heartfelt excitement at the announcement, paying tribute to the fans who have supported him across more than five decades.
“I’ve always had a fantastic time whenever we’ve played in Brazil,” he said.
“I didn’t manage to get to South America for the farewell tour, so when Rock In Rio asked me to play, I said ‘yes’ immediately. I love my Brazilian fans, they hold such a special place in my heart.”
He went on to explain how rejuvenating these one-off performances have been since retiring from touring:
“The energy these big one-off shows have been giving me since I stopped touring is unbeatable. As a band, we’re playing brilliantly and sounding as good as we ever have… I really cannot wait to return to Brazil next summer.”
With Elton John’s confirmed return, Rock in Rio 2026 is already shaping up to be a historic edition. Fans across the globe will undoubtedly be watching closely as one of music’s greatest artists steps back into the spotlight, not for a tour, not for an era, but for a moment. And for Elton John, a moment is all he needs to create magic.
More headliners and festival details are expected to be announced in the coming months, but for now, the spotlight shines brightly, and deservedly, on Sir Elton.
