Global pop sensation Ed Sheeran has revealed a surprising and low-key side to his celebrity life, he’s an active user of the film-focused social media platform Letterboxd, operating under a secret account that, until now, flew completely under the radar.
In a candid chat on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Sheeran opened up about his hidden movie obsession and the anonymous profile he's maintained on the app, where users rate, review, and log films they’ve watched. “No one knows I have a Letterboxd… I have no followers on it, literally I just log the films that I watch,” he admitted. “No one reads it, it’s just for me to log it.”
But in typical Sheeran fashion, the reveal wasn’t exactly a mic drop moment. Instead of outing himself with a username or drawing fans directly to the account, he teased its existence. “It’s public… I guess they’ll find out now. I think it’s more fun for people to find it,” he said with a grin, adding a dose of mystery to the otherwise casual confession.
The admission gives fans a fresh glimpse into the down-to-earth lifestyle of the chart-topping musician, who despite selling out stadiums and topping global music charts, still takes time to rate the latest indie dramas and box office hits like any average film lover.
Letterboxd, originally launched in 2011, has gained massive popularity in recent years, particularly among Gen Z and millennials, and has now started drawing in a growing number of celebrities. Sheeran’s quiet presence on the platform adds him to an ever-growing list of famous users who are joining in on the film conversation, some openly, some incognito.
Interestingly, Ed isn't the only public figure to pop up on the app lately. Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has also joined and has been logging and reviewing films, notably those by politically charged filmmaker Ken Loach. Meanwhile, pop provocateur Charli XCX has been far more visible with her film opinions, sharing her thoughts on some of 2024’s biggest cinema releases.
While fans are now scrambling to uncover Ed’s secret profile, one thing’s for sure, the idea that he might be lurking in the comments section of your favourite arthouse review or leaving a quiet five-star rating on a rom-com is enough to make any Sheerio’s heart race.
So, the hunt is officially on. Somewhere in the depths of Letterboxd, Ed Sheeran is watching, logging, and rating, and now, the world wants in.
