Fifteen people evacuated from their homes after landslide in La Laguna

A landslide along the TF-13 road, between Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo, in La Laguna, has led to the evacuation of fifteen residents after a massive rockfall caused significant damage to a nearby property.

A rock, weighing approximately one and a half tonnes, broke away from a hillside adjacent to the main road and hit a house, prompting immediate emergency action.

Although no injuries have been reported, authorities decided to evacuate the surrounding residential area as a precautionary measure. The fifteen displaced residents have been temporarily housed in accommodation arranged by the local council while safety assessments continue.

Officials from the Tenerife Cabildo have carried out an inspection of the road and confirmed that it remains safe for traffic. Nevertheless, the area will continue to be monitored closely in the event of further instability.

Landslides pose a serious risk in areas with steep terrain, particularly following heavy rainfall or disturbances to the land. They can be triggered by natural events such as storms, earthquakes, and volcanic activity, or by human actions including deforestation and construction.

Their sudden onset and destructive force can lead to widespread damage and pose a significant threat to both lives and property. Local authorities are urging residents to remain alert and to report any signs of land movement in the area, as further preventative measures may be required.
