The results are in, and Green Day’s 2004 rock opera ‘American Idiot’ has officially been crowned the biggest-selling rock album of the 21st century in the UK.
The announcement comes as part of National Album Day, with the Official Charts Company releasing a definitive list of the 40 biggest-selling rock and metal studio albums released since the year 2000.
Green Day’s politically charged concept album, featuring iconic anthems such as Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends, and the title track American Idiot, has sold more than 2.6 million UK chart units, a figure that combines both sales and streams across the past two decades.

In a statement celebrating the milestone, the band reflected on the enduring impact of the record, saying:
“We made American Idiot as a deeply human statement of defiance, against fear, against lies, against apathy. But also a character-driven concept album. It was risky, it was loud, it was personal, and it changed everything for us. Twenty years later, the fact that it still resonates means the world, and we’re very proud that it continues to inspire people everywhere.”
Originally released at the height of the early 2000s punk revival, American Idiot was not only a creative rebirth for Green Day but also a defining cultural moment. Its blend of angst, rebellion, and narrative storytelling captured the mood of a generation disillusioned with politics and media manipulation.
The album went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2005, spawned a Broadway musical adaptation, and re-established Green Day as one of the most influential bands in modern rock history.

Following close behind in second place is Linkin Park’s genre-defining debut ‘Hybrid Theory’ (2000), which has sold over 2 million UK chart units. The nu-metal landmark helped usher in a new sound for the millennium, combining rap, metal, and emotional introspection.
In third place is The Darkness with their flamboyant 2003 debut ‘Permission to Land’, which became an instant classic thanks to singles like I Believe in a Thing Called Love. The album has sold more than 1.45 million units.
Other acts rounding out the top five include Evanescence with ‘Fallen’ (1.35 million units) and Muse with their 2006 record ‘Black Holes & Revelations’ (1.22 million units).
