Gloria Hunniford has opened up about the real reason she was forced to bow out of Celebrity British Bake Off mid-episode, revealing she suffered a nasty fall backstage that landed her in hospital.
The 85-year-old television icon left viewers concerned during Sunday’s episode of the Stand Up To Cancer special when host Alison Hammond announced that Gloria had suddenly pulled out of the final showstopper challenge, simply stating that she had been “feeling unwell.” Now, Gloria has revealed the true extent of what happened, and it’s far more dramatic than anyone realised.
Speaking to The Mirror, Gloria explained: “I had a terrible fall at the end of the programme, so I never got to finish it.” She went on to confirm that she had to be rushed to hospital to be checked over following the incident, which took place during filming last summer.
The much-loved broadcaster had been taking part in the baking competition in memory of her late daughter, Caron Keating, who tragically passed away from breast cancer in 2004. Gloria had previously spoken about how personal and important it was for her to support the Stand Up To Cancer campaign, making her sudden disappearance from the episode all the more worrying for fans.
Despite the scare, Gloria was quick to reassure everyone that she is now fully recovered and doing well. “I’m fine now,” she said, bringing relief to viewers who were left puzzled and concerned by her unexplained exit from the tent.
While she didn’t get the chance to complete her final bake, Gloria’s participation in the charity special still made a significant impact, and her commitment to honouring her daughter’s memory shone through.
Her fellow celebrity bakers, including David Schwimmer, Gemma Collins and Tom Davis, continued with the final challenge, but many viewers felt Gloria’s absence in the final segment of the show.
The beloved presenter, known for her work on shows such as Loose Women, Rip Off Britain, and This Morning, is admired for her resilience and warmth, and fans have already taken to social media to send her their well wishes and praise her bravery.
