Gok Wan Opens Unique Restaurant Where Diners Eat Directly from the Floor

Celebrity chef and TV personality Gok Wan has launched a bold new dining experience with his restaurant, FLOORS, in Islington, north London, where diners are served food directly from the floor. This unconventional eatery offers an Asian-inspired tasting menu, but with a twist, the dishes are presented on the ground, served in protective casings made from natural materials.

FLOORS offers a range of innovative dishes, including lychee ceviche served in a chilled oyster shell, lotus leaf steamed meats featuring black bean peppered beef, duck, and oyster mushroom, and a decadent black sesame mochi cake with fuyu sour cream. Even the bill is edible, arriving as a rice paper receipt that diners can eat.

The idea behind FLOORS was developed in collaboration with Bosch, following a survey of 2,000 adults which revealed that 75% of people would never eat food that had fallen on the floor in a restaurant. However, 23% of respondents said they would be open to the experience if they were assured of proper hygiene, which the restaurant guarantees.

Gok Wan is no stranger to pushing culinary boundaries, and with FLOORS, he is challenging diners to rethink their perceptions of where and how food can be enjoyed. For those brave enough to take the plunge, the experience offers a blend of exquisite flavours, theatrical presentation, and a memorable dining adventure.

"We wanted to create something completely unique and a little bit daring," said Gok. "Dining should be fun, and at FLOORS, we’re giving people an unforgettable experience, incredible food, amazing flavours, and a setting that’s like nothing else."

While the concept may be divisive, with 58% of survey respondents expressing firm reluctance, FLOORS is already generating buzz for its creativity and bold approach to fine dining. For adventurous foodies, it promises an unforgettable meal, just don’t forget to look down.
