After nearly eight years together, Hollywood actress Dakota Johnson and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin have officially called it quits, ending their long-term relationship and quiet engagement.
The couple, who first began dating in 2017, have reportedly been navigating an on-off romance for quite some time, with sources close to the pair confirming that the relationship had “been over for a long time” before they finally decided to make it official.
In a revealing report by the Daily Mail, a source said, “They just haven’t been able to figure out how to make it official. Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much.”
Johnson, 34, and Martin, 47, had largely kept their relationship private over the years, occasionally stepping into the spotlight together but avoiding the kind of media frenzy that often surrounds celebrity couples. Despite the low profile, their bond appeared strong, particularly with Dakota’s close relationship with Martin’s two children, Apple and Moses, from his previous marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow.
The insider went on to describe the couple’s long, complicated journey toward this final split. “Breakups aren't instant. They continued to break up and make up. Sometimes things would work when they were apart, when they were working, because absence makes the heart grow fonder. But then they'd reunite, and little things just kept adding up to where they weren't right for each other anymore.”
The split is said to have hit Johnson especially hard. Known for her roles in Fifty Shades of Grey, The Lost Daughter, and Madame Web, the actress has reportedly been devastated, not only by the end of her romance with Martin but also by the change in her relationship with his children.
“Dakota is devastated that she isn’t going to be around his kids as much anymore,” the source added, “but wants them to know that she is always there for them.”
Neither Johnson nor Martin has publicly commented on the breakup, but the news has quickly spread across entertainment media, sparking sadness among fans who had hoped the low-key couple would eventually make it down the aisle.
