Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz reunite in Tenerife for the filming of Day Drinker

Hollywood returns to Tenerife as filming begins on Day Drinker, a new dramatic thriller directed by Marc Webb, best known for 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man series starring Andrew Garfield.

Backed by Lionsgate in collaboration with Spanish production company Nostromo Pictures, the film is shaping up to be an ambitious, action-filled, and mysterious cinematic project.

Johnny Depp Spotted on Set at Las Raíces

Johnny Depp, the globally recognised star of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, is already filming scenes on the island. On Monday, he was seen near Las Raíces road in Tenerife, where key scenes were being shot. For safety, the area was temporarily closed to traffic.

The scene in question featured artificially simulated weather conditions, with two large water tankers flooding the road to create a moody, rain-drenched atmosphere, a hallmark of the film’s tone.

Filming will continue on the island until the end of April before the production moves to mainland Spain. The second phase of shooting will take place primarily in Madrid and other Spanish locations, with the overall shoot expected to last at least two months.

A Long-Awaited Reunion

Day Drinker marks the fourth collaboration between Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz. The pair, whose professional and personal rapport has spanned decades, first shared the screen in Blow (2001), the biopic of drug trafficker George Jung. They reunited for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and again in Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express.

Penélope Cruz returns to the Canary Islands, having previously filmed Broken Embraces by Pedro Almodóvar and Ma Ma by Julio Médem in the region. While the details of her character in Day Drinker remain under wraps, it is confirmed she will play a central role in the story.

A High-Profile Cast and Intriguing Plot

Joining Depp and Cruz is Madelyn Cline, rising star known for her roles in Stranger Things and Knives Out: Glass Onion. The cast also features acclaimed Spanish actor Luis Tosar, returning to an English-language production following a successful run in European cinema.

Written by Zach Dean (The Tomorrow War, Deadfall), the screenplay centres on a cruise ship barman whose life is upended after he meets a mysterious woman, described only as a "day drinker." Her presence draws him into a complex web of criminal intrigue, set against the coastal backdrops of France, Portugal, and Spain. With unexpected twists and a mounting sense of tension, the film promises a compelling cinematic experience.

Tenerife’s Rising Star in Global Cinema

The selection of Tenerife as a filming location once again highlights the Canary Islands’ growing appeal for major international productions. With its stunning natural landscapes, year-round favourable climate, and competitive tax incentives, the archipelago is being increasingly recognised as a top-tier destination for the film industry.

The arrival of global icons like Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz not only raises the island’s profile on the international stage but also presents valuable opportunities for the local audiovisual sector, boosting employment and attracting investment into the region.
