It was a moment of awkward comedy that quickly went viral, and now Martin Brundle has publicly apologised to Lewis Capaldi after unintentionally snubbing the Scottish singer live on television during his famous F1 grid walk at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The Sky Sports presenter, known for his unpredictable celebrity interviews on the Formula 1 grid, hosted a typically chaotic segment on Sunday when he mistook Lewis Capaldi’s brother, Anthony, for the Someone You Loved singer.
Brundle first approached Anthony on the grid, asking: “Lewis! How are you feeling before the race?” before realising his mistake when the real Lewis Capaldi appeared moments later. The pair exchanged a brief chat filled with laughter and good humour before the now-infamous ending, when Brundle accidentally walked away just as Capaldi reached out to shake his hand.
With Brundle’s earpiece blaring countdown instructions to wrap up before the national anthem, he turned back toward the camera, leaving Capaldi’s hand hanging mid-air.
Ever the good sport, the singer laughed off the awkward moment, joking to the cameras, “I’ll hold that,” before shaking his own hand and walking away chuckling alongside his brother. The hilarious reaction quickly became a viral clip across X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, with fans praising Capaldi’s sense of humour and calling it “the most Lewis Capaldi moment ever.”
After the incident exploded online, Brundle took to social media to apologise for the mix-up, writing:
“Sincere apologies, Lewis. I turned around to the camera with an urgent 3-second count going on in my ears to wind up for the national anthem.
Had no idea you were trying to shake my hand. A cardinal sin on my part, which I hope to put right one day. Hope you enjoyed F1.”
Capaldi has not publicly responded to the apology yet, but fans suspect he found it just as amusing as everyone else. One fan commented on X, “Lewis shaking his own hand has to be one of the funniest things I’ve seen this year. Martin Brundle owes him a pint!”
Another joked, “Brundle vs Capaldi, the crossover I never knew I needed. Get them both back for a rematch at Silverstone!”
The incident joins a long list of viral Brundle grid walk moments. Over the years, he’s accidentally interrupted celebrities including Megan Thee Stallion, Brad Pitt, and Venus Williams in his quest to grab last-minute interviews before the race begins.
Despite the chaos, the former F1 driver remains a fan favourite for his quick wit and unfiltered charm, even when things don’t go quite as planned.
As for Capaldi, the singer has been keeping a lower profile following his recent break from touring to focus on his health, but fans were delighted to see him looking relaxed and happy at the race weekend.
If Brundle has his way, the two will meet again, hopefully next time for a proper handshake.
