TV favourite Josie Gibson has shocked fans by revealing she has been diagnosed with gout, a condition commonly associated with the Middle Ages, following the filming of her extravagant new Channel 5 travel series, Around The World In First Class.
The This Morning star, known for her bubbly personality and adventurous spirit, took to the skies for the luxury travelogue, which saw her embark on 12 lavish first-class flights and private jet journeys, staying in suites costing upwards of $20,000 per night in destinations including the Middle East and the Caribbean. However, the opulent lifestyle came at a price.
Ahead of her next television challenge, The 1970s Diet, Gibson underwent a full medical check-up and was stunned to be told she had developed gout, a form of inflammatory arthritis that causes sudden and severe joint pain, often affecting the big toe, ankles, feet, and wrists.
Speaking about her diagnosis, Josie admitted: “I thought gout was only for old men but I have been living quite a lavish life. Before I filmed this show, I caught a lot of flights, I drank a lot of champagne, I ate a lot of rich food and I had little sleep. That's how I ended up getting gout.”
The Channel 5 series, now available on the broadcaster’s streaming service, showcases Gibson living the high life, experiencing the best luxury travel has to offer. But beneath the champagne toasts and five-star hotel stays, she was already suffering from the symptoms of the condition. “My toes had been hurting me throughout the show,” she confessed.
Gout affects an estimated 1.5 million people in the UK and is on the rise, with cases increasing by around four percent annually. Often dubbed the “disease of kings,” it’s typically triggered by a diet rich in red meat, seafood, and alcohol, the kind of indulgence Josie experienced during her whirlwind global adventure.
While the diagnosis came as a surprise to the 39-year-old presenter, it hasn’t dampened her spirits. Fans are now looking forward to seeing her take on her next challenge, The 1970s Diet, where she’ll swap champagne for cabbage soup and steak tartare for Spam sandwiches in an experiment to see how retro food trends affect modern health.
As for Josie, she’s taking it all in stride, medieval malady and all, proving that even in first class, health doesn’t take a backseat.
