MACAULAY CULKIN CLEARS UP HOME ALONE RUMOURS 35 YEARS ON

It’s been 35 years since Home Alone hit cinema screens and turned a then 10-year-old Macaulay Culkin into one of the most famous faces in Hollywood. Now, the former child star has finally addressed some of the biggest rumours surrounding the Christmas classic, and cleared up a few long-standing fan theories in the process.

In a rare interview on the hit YouTube series Hot Ones, Culkin spoke candidly about his time filming the 1990 blockbuster, lifting the lid on behind-the-scenes secrets, script changes, and which iconic moments were actually improvised.

For years, many fans believed Culkin ad-libbed the unforgettable line: “You guys give up? Or are you thirsty for more?” during one of Kevin McCallister’s daring confrontations with the Wet Bandits. However, Culkin was quick to set the record straight.

“No, that was in the script,” he revealed. “I can’t take credit for that one.”

But while that famous line wasn’t his, the actor confirmed that another memorable moment was indeed all him. In the supermarket scene, when Kevin is asked why he won’t reveal where his parents are, Culkin improvised the witty reply: “Because you’re a stranger.”

“That one was mine,” he said. “I did a lot of that kind of stuff.”

The actor also addressed one of the movie’s most bizarre and enduring fan rumours, the identity of “Buzz’s girlfriend.” In the film, Kevin finds a photograph of his on-screen brother’s girlfriend and delivers the hilariously cutting line: “Buzz, your girlfriend, woof!”

For decades, it’s been claimed the picture wasn’t actually of a girl at all, but a member of the production crew’s son dressed as one, so as not to be unkind to an actual young actress. Culkin confirmed the rumour is true.

“Yep, it was a crew member’s kid,” he laughed. “They put a wig on him and made him look awkward. Poor guy.”

The interview has delighted long-time Home Alone fans, who have spent decades quoting the film and passing on these behind-the-scenes tidbits. Culkin, who has largely stepped back from the spotlight in recent years, seemed relaxed and nostalgic as he recounted the filming process.

He also hinted at the surreal nature of the film’s lasting impact:

“It’s funny that all these little moments we made back then are still talked about today. It was just a job to me at the time, but it became this huge thing.”

With Home Alone still watched by millions every Christmas, it’s clear that Kevin McCallister’s adventures, and Macaulay Culkin’s quick wit, will continue to bring festive joy for many more years to come.
