Mariah Carey, the five-time Grammy-winning global icon, has once again reminded the world that she plays by her own rules, especially when it comes to ageing.
The “Fantasy” and “Hero” singer, known for her larger-than-life presence and evergreen voice, has declared that she simply does not acknowledge the concept of time. While many celebrities turn to skincare routines and wellness trends to combat the effects of ageing, Mariah’s secret is far more philosophical, she pretends it doesn’t exist.
“I don’t know time. I don’t know numbers. I do not acknowledge time,” she said in a recent interview while promoting her upcoming album.
This isn’t new for Mariah, 55, who famously does not celebrate birthdays. Instead, she refers to them as “anniversaries”, a nod to her desire to remain timeless in both mind and spirit. In fact, she’s been known to skip any mention of her age entirely, leaning instead into the fantasy of eternal diva-hood.
She even joked that her new single begins with that very idea:
“I have a new song that starts with that line…”
Carey is currently preparing for a major return to the stage as she headlines Brighton Pride this Saturday, marking her first UK performance since her 2019 Caution World Tour. Her Pride appearance is already being billed as one of the biggest moments of the summer and will see the global superstar bring her signature high notes, sequins, and sass to the seaside stage.
In addition to the headline slot, Mariah has also confirmed the September release of her long-awaited new album, Here For It All, her first since 2018’s critically acclaimed Caution.
While full details about the album remain under wraps, fans are already speculating that it will be a return to the bold, vocal-driven anthems that made her a pop and R&B icon in the 1990s and 2000s.
Mariah’s refusal to acknowledge the passage of time has become a key part of her public persona. Over the years, she’s leaned into the diva role with a wink and a smile, whether it’s bathing in milk, travelling with her own lighting crew, or declaring that she “doesn’t know her” when asked about other artists.
