Soul icon Macy Gray is making a powerful return to the spotlight with the announcement of her first solo album in seven years, and fans in the UK could be in for an extra special treat, as the Grammy-winning star hints at a potential surprise appearance at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.
The singer-songwriter, best known for her distinctive raspy vocals and global hit I Try, revealed in an exclusive chat with The Sun that she’s hard at work on a new record, her first solo effort since 2018’s Ruby, which featured standout tracks like Buddha, Cold World, and Sugar Daddy.
“We’re probably going to drop a record when we’re in the UK,” Macy shared. “We’re in the middle of it and we want to drop some songs to see what everybody thinks. Then I will probably be able to put out an album by September.”
While she stopped short of confirming the album’s title or full release date, Macy did hint that fans won’t have to wait long to hear what she’s been cooking up, and her time in the UK may be more than just promotional. When asked about Glastonbury, she played coy but left the door wide open: “You never know. It could happen.”
If it does, it would mark a thrilling return to the iconic festival for the soul star, whose unique sound and magnetic stage presence have made her a live favourite around the globe.
Macy also offered insight into the creative direction of the new album, explaining that she’s deliberately dialling back the production to let her unmistakable voice shine. “It’s raw. It’s stripped down,” she said. “I’m having fun making it.”
That back-to-basics approach marks a shift from the more polished sound of her recent projects and promises to showcase Macy’s emotive vocals and lyrical vulnerability in a fresh new light. After years of genre-blending collaborations and artistic reinvention, it seems Macy Gray is returning to her roots, and doing it on her own terms.
