Miley Cyrus has revealed she has no plans to hit the road in the near future, and says she feels no desire to ever tour again, citing the toll it takes on her mental health.
The Flowers hitmaker made the candid comments during a new interview with Good Morning America, where she appeared to promote her latest album, Something Beautiful.
The 31-year-old singer and songwriter said she feels lucky to have the physical ability and opportunity to tour, but admitted she no longer has the emotional drive for it.
“I do have the physical ability and I have the opportunities to tour. I wish I had the desire, but I don’t,” she explained honestly.
Touring takes its toll
Cyrus, who began performing as a teenager in her Hannah Montana days, explained that life on the road can quickly become damaging for artists, referencing stars like Prince, who struggled with the pressures of fame.
“I also don’t think there’s actually an infrastructure that supports artists. The artists like Prince, that are not here today, that lived such a high-intensity lifestyle. You’re out on the road, and it’s hard to maintain sobriety when you’re on the road, which is a really important pillar of stability in my life. Not only losing their life but losing their minds,” she said.
Miley went on to explain how the highs of touring, playing for tens of thousands of fans each night, can lead to emotional crashes.
“None of this that I create would ever be possible without the way that I think about things. I do think it’s really hard to keep mental wellness. You have so many thousands of people screaming at you. You feel a lot of love, then you totally crash at the end of the show,” she shared.
“You start thinking one person loving you is not enough. It needs to be 10,000. It needs to be 80,000.”
Focusing on what matters
Miley made it clear she still loves making music and connecting with her audience, but is now focused on finding balance, maintaining her sobriety, and protecting her mental well-being.
Her new album Something Beautiful, which blends pop, rock, and soulful ballads, has already been hailed by critics as some of her most mature and heartfelt work yet.
While some fans may be disappointed at her decision to step away from touring, many have expressed their support for her prioritising her health and happiness.
One fan wrote on social media: “Miley choosing her mental health over the machine of the industry is inspiring. Do what’s right for you!”
For now, fans can enjoy her music in recorded form, and hope she finds joy in performing live again someday, on her own terms.
