More than 25 years on from their Britpop heyday, Oasis’ words still resonate, and now fans have chosen the most iconic lyric of them all.
A new poll of 2,000 adults has revealed the top 10 most memorable Oasis lyrics, with the timeless refrain “Don’t look back in anger, I heard you say” from the 1996 classic Don’t Look Back In Anger taking the top spot.
The anthemic ballad, sung by Noel Gallagher, has become synonymous with resilience and unity, and remains one of the band’s most beloved singalongs.
In second place came Wonderwall, arguably their most famous track, with the line: “I said maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me.”
Third was another lyric from Don’t Look Back In Anger: “So, Sally can wait, she knows it’s too late as we’re walking on by”, proving just how deeply that single has embedded itself in the public consciousness.
Rounding out the top five were Live Forever’s hopeful “You and I are gonna live forever”, and the bittersweet Stand By Me line: “Stand by me, nobody knows the way it’s gonna be.”
Other classics to feature in the top 10 included Rock ’n’ Roll Star’s defiant “Tonight, I’m a rock ‘n’ roll star”, and the darker Morning Glory lyric: “All your dreams are made when you’re chained to the mirror and the razor blade.”
The study also revealed the lasting emotional impact of the band’s music on their fans.
Almost half (44%) said a lyric’s emotional power was the most important factor in making it memorable, while 35% rated clever wordplay and rhyme.
Cultural and social relevance mattered too, with 19% citing this as a key factor when picking out lyrics that have stuck with them.
Many fans also admitted the music has influenced their lives in surprising ways — 13% said an Oasis song lyric had prompted them to reconnect with someone, while 9% had even booked a spontaneous trip after hearing a line that inspired them.
The songs remain a popular soundtrack for road trips (28%) and have a strong nostalgic pull, with 26% saying they evoke happy memories.
Unsurprisingly, the enduring demand for Oasis’ music means tickets for Noel and Liam Gallagher’s solo tours are as hotly contested as ever, with 14% of fans confessing they felt jealous seeing others get the tickets they wanted.
Even though the band famously split in 2009, these results confirm what fans have always known: Oasis’ words and music continue to define a generation.
