Oscar-winner Olivia Colman is the latest A-lister to front a Warburtons campaign, joining an elite club that includes Robert De Niro, George Clooney, and Samuel L. Jackson, and this time, she’s on a mission for crumpets.
The Crown and Fleabag star will appear in the bakery brand’s newest advert, set to premiere on May 3 during Britain’s Got Talent on ITV. Playing a fictionalised version of herself, Colman takes on the role of a high-ranking official from the “Department of National Treasures,” storming into Warburtons HQ to “test” the quality of their beloved crumpets and other baked goods.
But things quickly take a cheeky twist. What starts as a government-style inspection soon reveals itself to be an elaborate ruse, as Colman gleefully rounds up packets of crumpets to smuggle home, leaving boss Jonathan Warburton bemused and the factory shelves noticeably lighter.
With her trademark humour and impeccable comedic timing, Colman delivers the goods, both literally and figuratively. Reflecting on the experience, she said: “You butter believe it was a tough job, but I was more than happy to oblige. Though I’m surprised Jonathan didn’t rumble me from the start. And let’s be honest, who really needs convincing that the Great British Crumpet is a National Treasure? I was simply there to ensure a lifetime supply landed in my kitchen!”
The tongue-in-cheek ad is the latest in Warburtons’ long-running campaign that combines big-budget storytelling with beloved celebrity cameos. The bakery giant has become known for its star-studded adverts that blend British humour with a passion for baked goods, and Colman’s new instalment is set to be one of the most entertaining yet.
As the anticipation builds ahead of its Friday debut, fans can expect a fun, feel-good ad that celebrates Britain’s love affair with the humble crumpet, and proves once again that Olivia Colman can do no wrong, even when she’s up to mischief in a bakery.
