Fans of Peaky Blinders have reason to celebrate once again as the BBC has officially confirmed that the Shelby family’s story is not over. Four years after the hit drama’s final episode, two brand-new series are in development, and both promise to be as gritty, violent, and compelling as ever.
The announcement was made by series creator and writer Steven Knight, who revealed that the new instalments will be broadcast on both BBC and Netflix, making the show accessible to an even wider international audience.
Knight said: “I’m thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.”
Set in 1953 – a new era for the Shelbys
The new storylines will take place in 1953, eight years after the end of World War Two. Birmingham is still recovering from the devastation of the Blitz, and once again, the Shelbys are at the heart of it all.
The official synopsis teases: “Birmingham is reconstructing after being heavily bombed during the war, with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.”
The original series, starring Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, charted the rise of the family from small-time gangsters to international power players between the 1919 post-war years and the 1930s. Now, the focus is set to shift onto a new generation, though Knight has hinted there will still be plenty of links to the characters fans already know and love.
A global success story
Since its debut in 2013, Peaky Blinders has become one of Britain’s most successful dramas, gaining millions of fans worldwide thanks to its cinematic storytelling, stylish period detail, and unforgettable performances. The series concluded in 2022 after six acclaimed seasons, with Murphy winning widespread praise for his portrayal of Tommy Shelby.
The announcement of two new series signals that the franchise is far from finished. Knight has previously spoken about the idea of a Peaky Blinders film, and while this remains in discussion, the two new series will ensure the Shelby name lives on for years to come.
Netflix and the BBC team up for the upcoming series, which tracks the next generation of the Shelby family.
Fans react to the news
Reaction online has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly from long-time fans who felt the original finale left space for the story to continue. Many praised the decision to move the timeline into the 1950s, which promises a fresh look at Britain’s social, political, and criminal underworld during a time of massive change.
One fan wrote on Facebook: “Best news I’ve heard all year, we’ve missed the Shelbys, bring it on.” Another added: “If it’s written by Steven Knight, we know it’s going to be quality. Can’t wait.”
With Knight promising another “hell of a ride” and the Shelby family once again at the centre of Birmingham’s dangerous underworld, audiences can expect high drama, shocking twists, and no shortage of the blood and grit that made Peaky Blinders a global phenomenon.
