Pearl Jam fans around the world are reeling after long-time drummer Matt Cameron announced his departure from the band after nearly three decades behind the kit.
The 61-year-old musician, widely regarded as one of the greatest rock drummers of his generation, joined the Seattle rockers in 1998 and has been a driving force in their sound ever since. Before that, Cameron was already a legend in his own right as a founding member of fellow grunge pioneers Soundgarden alongside the late Chris Cornell.
Breaking the news on Instagram, Cameron wrote a heartfelt message to his followers:
“After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam. Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter.
I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It’s been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
Fans have flooded social media with messages of love and gratitude, citing his powerful drumming on albums such as Binaural, Riot Act, and Gigaton, and his relentless energy on stage.
The remaining members of Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Mike McCready, released their own moving statement paying tribute to Cameron’s contributions:
“From being one of our first musical heroes in the bands Skin Yard and the mighty Soundgarden, to playing on our first demos in 1990, Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer.
He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music.
We love you, Matt.”
Cameron has not revealed his future plans, signing off his post simply with “more to follow,” leaving fans hopeful they haven’t heard the last of his immense talent.
