He might have mellowed with age, but Robbie Williams still isn’t one to hold back his opinions, especially when it comes to the Gallagher brothers.
The 50-year-old pop icon has taken a subtle swipe at Noel Gallagher, claiming the Oasis songwriter’s “magic” faded after the band’s first two albums.
Speaking on the Heretics podcast, Robbie reflected on creativity, fame, and artistic longevity, using Noel as an example of how quickly inspiration can peak and fade.
“It’s very interesting about how, why the magic is there and when the magic leaves, and who gets the magic for the longest,” Robbie said. “Like Noel Gallagher, right? Three-year, very, very, very hot streak, like the best on the planet in that moment. And, you know, B-sides that everybody else would just want one of those for themselves, for the rest of their lives to tour on the end of it. And he just shat them. Every time he sat down, it was just gold, gold, gold, gold, gold.”
The Angels hitmaker praised Noel’s early work, acknowledging that Definitely Maybe (1994) and (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? (1995) represented a creative peak rarely matched in modern music.
But Williams then added, with characteristic cheek, that Noel’s songwriting “magic” didn’t last forever:
“You can see that for whatever reason, the third album was still really impressive. I'd love that. But then, you know, with respect, because he's still an amazing songwriter, magic, gone.”
He went on to compare the fleeting nature of creative brilliance across artists, saying even legends like Paul McCartney couldn’t sustain it forever.
“When did that ethereal quality leave Paul McCartney? He seemed to get it for the longest time. But I don’t think anybody gets to stay in the pocket forever.”
The comments mark the latest twist in one of pop’s most notorious rivalries. Williams and the Gallaghers famously feuded in the late 1990s and early 2000s after Noel once called Robbie “the fat dancer from Take That.” Robbie retaliated by challenging Liam Gallagher to a £100,000 boxing match live at the 2000 BRIT Awards, cementing the bad blood between them.

While things have softened over the years, Robbie has often said he now finds Liam “funny and charismatic”, this latest jab at Noel is sure to raise eyebrows among Oasis fans.
The Rock DJ singer didn’t appear malicious in his remarks, however. His tone on the podcast was one of fascination with the mystery of creativity rather than hostility. Williams even described Noel as “still an amazing songwriter,” acknowledging that the High Flying Birds frontman continues to produce solid work.
Still, the comment about Noel’s “magic being gone” will no doubt fuel debate among fans of both artists. Oasis’s early albums are still considered some of the greatest in British rock history, but many have argued that later records like Be Here Now and Standing on the Shoulder of Giants lacked the same raw spark.
Robbie, who has enjoyed a hugely successful solo career spanning three decades, has often mused about the highs and lows of artistic inspiration. In the same interview, he admitted that he too has struggled with creative burnout over the years, saying, “No one stays at their creative peak forever, and that’s okay.”
Whether Noel will respond remains to be seen, but if history is anything to go by, we could be in for another round of witty jabs between two of Britain’s most outspoken stars.
