Ricky Gervais fans have reason to celebrate, the award-winning comedian is returning to Netflix with a brand-new series, and he’s bringing much of the beloved After Life cast along with him.
Netflix has announced Alley Cats, an animated adult comedy series created by and starring Gervais. Known for his sharp wit and ability to balance heartfelt moments with biting humour, the comedian is stepping into new territory with this project, which will feature bold 2D animation and a line-up of recognisable voices.
Many of the actors who made After Life such a success will be joining him once again, including Tom Basden (Matt), Tony Way (Lenny), David Earl (Brian), Kerry Godliman (Lisa), Jo Hartley (June), and Diane Morgan (Kath). Fans will also hear EastEnders’ favourite Natalie Cassidy (Sonia Fowler) and Andrew Brooke (Kevin from After Life), rounding out what is shaping up to be a reunion worth tuning in for.
Netflix teased the premise in its official announcement, describing the show as “a slacker sitcom created by and starring the multi award-winning Ricky Gervais. The adult animation follows the trials and tribulations of a group of feral British cats from all walks of society, who seek companionship while ruminating on everyday life.”

While fans are still waiting for a trailer, the streaming giant promises a series packed with Gervais’ signature mix of humour, heart, and social commentary, much like what made After Life a worldwide hit when it premiered in 2019.
The show, which explored grief, friendship, and healing through the story of Tony (played by Gervais) navigating life after the loss of his wife Lisa, became one of Netflix’s most-watched comedies and sparked widespread conversations about mental health and resilience.
Now, Alley Cats is set to take that emotional depth and deliver it through the lens of a quirky animated world. Early concept art shared by Netflix suggests a visually distinctive style, with anthropomorphic cats roaming gritty back alleys and engaging in witty, philosophical conversations about the world around them.
This isn’t Gervais’ first foray into animation, he previously narrated The Ricky Gervais Show, which became an acclaimed animated series based on his popular podcast with Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington. But this time, he’s not just narrating; he’s voicing and leading the project from the ground up.
Although Netflix hasn’t yet confirmed a release date, production is reportedly well underway, with fans hoping to see the series drop sometime in 2026.
For those who loved After Life and its unique blend of humour and humanity, Alley Cats looks set to scratch the same itch, only this time with claws out and tails up.
