Roman Kemp has revealed that he’s been permanently banned from interviewing Jennifer Lawrence, and it all stems from an awkward encounter back in 2015.
The Capital FM host, now one of the UK’s most recognisable broadcasters, recalled the incident in a throwback Instagram post this week, sharing a snapshot from the day things went spectacularly wrong.
It all happened while Jennifer Lawrence was promoting her film Joy, in which she played a struggling single mother who becomes a self-made businesswoman. Roman was sent along to do the interview, but he claims he didn’t actually know what questions he was supposed to ask until he arrived.
“My bosses had written a list of questions,” Roman said. “I hadn’t seen them until I got there.”
Roman Kemp says he’s banned from interviewing Jennifer Lawrence following a “cringe” 2015 encounter
From the start, the conversation was rocky. Roman remembers Jennifer making it clear she wasn’t particularly enjoying the process. According to him, she described the interview as “sucking” for her, and gave short, clipped responses to his questions.
Still, Roman, known for his playful presenting style, decided to try and lighten the mood with a cheeky stunt. That’s when he pretended to be her ultimate superfan, complete with what appeared to be a tattoo of her face on his chest.
Unfortunately for Roman, Jennifer didn’t find it quite as funny as he had hoped. In fact, he says she was so unimpressed that she asked security to remove him from the room entirely.
“She did NOT find it funny,” Roman admitted in his Instagram caption. “I was escorted out by security and told I would never interview her again.”
The picture he shared shows him pulling open his shirt to reveal the fake tattoo, grinning from ear to ear, oblivious to the fact that it was about to be the end of his chat with the Hunger Games star.
While Roman clearly sees the funny side now, at the time the incident became a bit of a broadcasting cautionary tale. Entertainment press junkets can be tense at the best of times, actors often have to answer the same questions for hours on end, and one joke too many can be all it takes to derail the whole thing.
The 32-year-old spoke to the actress while she promoted Joy in 2015, armed with a list of questions from his Capital FM bosses.
Over the years, Roman has interviewed everyone from Ed Sheeran to Margot Robbie, but Jennifer Lawrence remains firmly off the guest list. He’s since gone on to carve out a hugely successful career, with stints on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, The One Show, and his own high-profile Capital Breakfast slot.
