Comedy legend Rowan Atkinson has reignited fan hopes of a Mr Bean return, more than three decades after the beloved character first hit television screens.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain, Atkinson addressed the long-standing rumours about whether he might revive the role that made him a global icon, and while he wasn’t making any promises, his comments suggest the door isn’t completely closed.
“Occasionally, I think about it,” he said. “Is it worth it? Is there any need? It probably won’t happen. Almost certainly won’t happen. But I have to say, it’s not an impossibility.”
It’s the most open Atkinson has been in recent years about the future of Mr Bean, who first appeared in 1990 and ran for just 15 episodes before becoming an international sensation, spawning a franchise that includes animated series, global merchandising, and two box office hits, Bean (1997) and Mr Bean’s Holiday (2006).
Although the original sitcom ended in 1995, the character has popped up in various forms ever since, with Atkinson reprising the role for live appearances, charity sketches, and even a viral YouTube video that clocked millions of views.
Despite the enduring popularity of the character, Atkinson has previously expressed mixed feelings about returning to the role, citing the physical demands of portraying Mr Bean’s slapstick antics and his desire to explore new creative projects.
However, the latest comments offer a glimmer of hope to fans who have been clamouring for a new adventure from Britain’s most bumbling export.
Mr Bean, with his silent misadventures and universal humour, remains one of the most recognisable comedy characters worldwide, transcending language barriers and entertaining generations.
And while nothing is confirmed, Atkinson’s admission that a return is “not an impossibility” may just be enough to spark fresh speculation, and renewed excitement, that Mr Bean could yet make one final comeback.
