Fresh off a record-breaking year in music, Sabrina Carpenter is making the leap back to the big screen, and this time, she’s heading straight into Wonderland.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Espresso singer and global pop star has been tapped to star in and produce a brand-new reboot of Alice in Wonderland for Universal Pictures. The project is described as a reimagining of the beloved Lewis Carroll classic, and one that Carpenter herself has been personally passionate about for quite some time.
While details about the plot and Carpenter’s specific role remain tightly under wraps, sources close to the production say that she approached the studio over a year ago with ideas for a modern and inventive take on the iconic story. The film has since evolved into what insiders are calling a “passion project” for the rising multi-hyphenate performer.
Carpenter, who first shot to fame on Disney Channel before becoming one of pop music’s biggest breakout stars, will also serve as a producer on the project, marking another major step in her rapidly expanding creative career.
Universal has confirmed that Lorene Scafaria, the acclaimed writer and director of Hustlers starring Jennifer Lopez, will write and direct the new adaptation. A release date has yet to be set, and no other cast members have been announced, though industry watchers are already speculating that Universal will build a high-profile ensemble around Carpenter.

That film grossed over $1 billion worldwide and inspired a sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass, in 2016.
