It’s heartbreak on the ballroom floor as Neighbours legend Stefan Dennis has been forced to withdraw from this year’s Strictly Come Dancing after suffering a serious calf injury.
The news was confirmed by the BBC on social media yesterday, leaving fans stunned and disappointed. Dennis, 65, who is best known for playing the iconic villain Paul Robinson in the long-running Australian soap, said he was “devastated” to bow out of the competition after what he described as his “most rewarding experience in years.”
In a heartfelt statement shared with his followers, Stefan revealed:
“This morning I woke up to the most disappointing day of my Strictly journey. Just when I had finally gained the confidence to do well with my dancing and achieve more great performances, I was told that on Saturday I had torn my calf so significantly that I am now forced to withdraw from the show.”
He went on to thank his professional partner Dianne Buswell, who is currently pregnant, praising her patience, support, and positivity throughout their time together.
“I can’t tell you how devastated I am to have to leave so prematurely,” he wrote. “There has been, and still is, so much love and support from everyone for both Dianne and myself. I owe the Strictly family and Dianne a massive debt of gratitude for giving me the opportunity to fulfil my dream of being able to dance with my wife. (When my leg is better.)”

Fans of the Aussie actor will recall that Stefan had already faced challenges earlier in the competition, having been forced to miss a live show due to illness just weeks ago. But the resilient performer bounced back stronger than ever, delivering what judges described as his “most confident and charismatic” performance yet upon his return.
His latest setback, however, has drawn an outpouring of sympathy from Strictly fans and fellow contestants alike. Dianne, who had formed a close bond with Stefan, posted a touching message of her own, writing, “I’m heartbroken for Stefan. He worked so hard every single week and brought so much joy to rehearsals. I’m so proud of how far he came, he really did shine.”
The BBC also issued a statement, wishing Stefan a speedy recovery:
“We’re so sad to see Stefan leave the competition earlier than expected. He has been a joy to watch and brought a wonderful energy to the show. We wish him all the best with his recovery and hope to see him back in the ballroom soon, even if it’s just for a visit!”
Despite the disappointment, Dennis remains upbeat, teasing fans with a cheeky nod to his soap opera roots:
“Fun fact for all the avid Neighbours fans, Paul Robinson never gives up, and neither will I!”
The actor’s withdrawal leaves a gap in the competition, with many speculating that this could lead to a surprise comeback or reshuffle in the upcoming live show. Viewers are already calling for Stefan to be invited back for the Christmas Special, once his leg has healed, of course.
