SYDNEY SWEENEY BOND GIRL RUMOURS, SAYS SHE’D ‘HAVE MORE FUN AS JAMES BOND’

Sydney Sweeney has officially shut down the rumours linking her to the next James Bond film, but she’s made it clear that if she ever did join the legendary franchise, she’d want the lead role, not the love interest.

In a brand-new cover interview with Variety, the 27-year-old Euphoria and Anyone But You actress spoke candidly about the long-running speculation that she might be in the running to play the next Bond girl. But instead of confirming anything, she playfully dismissed the idea and flipped it on its head.

“I can’t,” she said when first asked about the rumours, before pausing for several seconds and laughing. “I don’t know… To be honest, I don’t know all the Bond rumours, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the franchise, and I’m excited and curious to see what they do with it.”

When pressed on whether she’d take the part if offered, Sweeney didn’t hold back. “Depends on the script,” she said, before adding with a grin: “I think I’d have more fun as James Bond.”

Her tongue-in-cheek response immediately set social media alight, with fans applauding the actress for her confidence and for challenging the traditional gender expectations around the iconic spy role. One fan on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Sydney Sweeney as Bond? That’s the reboot we didn’t know we needed,” while another commented, “Forget Bond girl, let’s see Bond herself.”

Rumours about Sweeney’s potential involvement in the franchise have circulated for months, ever since she emerged as one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars. With standout performances in Euphoria, The White Lotus, and romantic comedy Anyone But You, she’s become both a box office draw and a red carpet favourite.

Talk of a female-led Bond movie isn’t new, over the years, actors like Lashana Lynch and Charlize Theron have discussed the idea of a woman taking over as 007. But Sweeney’s comments arrive just as Amazon MGM Studios begins developing the next phase of the James Bond franchise, following Daniel Craig’s emotional exit after 2021’s No Time To Die.

Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the long-time Bond producers, have been keeping details of the reboot tightly under wraps. No new Bond has yet been confirmed, though names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, and Regé-Jean Page have all been floated by fans and bookmakers alike.

Sweeney, meanwhile, continues to be one of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars. She recently wrapped production on Marvel’s Madame Web and is set to appear in several high-profile projects, including psychological thriller Echo Valley. Her combination of old-school glamour and modern confidence has led many to compare her to classic Hollywood icons, the kind of qualities that make her a perfect candidate for, well, Bond anything.

Whether or not she ever steps into MI6’s world, Sweeney’s statement makes one thing clear: she’s not waiting around to play someone else’s sidekick. She’s writing her own rules, and audiences can’t seem to get enough.
