Strictly Come Dancing fans have been dealt a blow ahead of the 2025 series, as long-time professional dancer Gorka Marquez has confirmed he won’t be partnered with a celebrity this year.
In a statement released on Instagram, the Spanish dancer announced that he will be stepping away from the main competition due to a new commitment abroad, as a judge on Spain’s version of the show, “Bailando con las Estrellas.”
Gorka wrote: “I’m so excited to finally share the news that I will be a judge on the next season of Bailando con las Estrellas in Spain from September.”
“Due to the filming dates, this means that I won’t be competing with a partner this year in Strictly but I will still be part of the group numbers and will be back for the final weeks of the show to support the rest of my fellow pros and their celebrities in what is going to be an AMAZING series.”
A Break – But Not Goodbye
While Gorka won’t be taking to the floor with a celebrity partner, fans will still see him in group routines throughout the series, and he’s set to return to support his fellow professionals in the final stages of the show.
The 34-year-old dancer, who joined Strictly in 2016, has become a staple of the show, known for his charisma, sharp technique, and passionate performances. He’s reached the final three times, with Alexandra Burke in 2017, Maisie Smith in 2020, and Helen Skelton in 2022, but has never taken home the Glitterball Trophy.
His absence from the main competition will be deeply felt, particularly among fans who had hoped this might finally be his year to win.

An International Opportunity
Gorka’s new judging gig is a significant move for the dancer, who hails from Bilbao, Spain. His role on Bailando con las Estrellas marks his first time stepping into a judging role, a sign that he’s expanding his career beyond dancing.
He added: “To be asked to join the judging panel in my home country is an honour. I’ve learned so much from working on Strictly, and I’m looking forward to bringing that experience to Bailando. But Strictly will always be my family.”
Support from Strictly Family
Many of Gorka’s Strictly co-stars and former celebrity partners were quick to flood his Instagram post with well-wishes and messages of support.
Fellow pro dancer Dianne Buswell wrote: “You’ll be missed but we’re so proud of you Gorks!”
Meanwhile, former celeb partner Helen Skelton commented: “Spain are lucky to have you, judge!”
Strictly 2025 Shaping Up
With the official Strictly Come Dancing 2025 lineup set to be revealed in the coming weeks, excitement is already building despite Gorka’s absence. The BBC is promising one of the most diverse and dynamic casts yet, and with Gorka popping back in later in the series, viewers can still expect to see plenty of him on screen.
