Fans of The Only Way Is Essex have a festive treat to look forward to once again, as ITV2 has confirmed the return of the show’s Christmas special following its huge success last year.
The long-running reality favourite is gearing up to launch its 36th series this autumn, and producers have already signed off on a festive spin-off to air towards the end of the year.
The Christmas special has not always been a permanent fixture of the TOWIE calendar. After skipping several years, ITV brought it back in 2023, and viewers were hooked by the dramatic dinner party scenes, full of fiery confrontations, emotional meltdowns, and more than a few tears over turkey.
This year, show bosses are reportedly determined to deliver even more memorable moments.
A source told The Sun:
“In the past, the show has skipped the festive episodes for a few years, but it recently returned and has been on a series-by-series basis. Last year’s dinner party was a massive hit with viewers, and bosses are keen to replicate that fiery drama for this year’s Christmas special.”
Big returns, new romances
One storyline fans are eager to see play out is Ella Rae Wise’s reunion with Dan Edgar. Ella, who caused waves on Celebrity Big Brother, and Dan, fresh from his stint on Dancing on Ice, will come face-to-face for the first time since their high-profile split earlier this year.
Viewers will also get to follow Junaid Ahmed and Joe Blackman as their romance deepens, with insiders teasing that the pair are ready to take the next step in their relationship, although it remains to be seen whether the Essex Christmas spirit can keep their drama-free streak alive.
The autumn series is currently in production, with filming locations already spotted across Essex and some glamorous overseas destinations. But it’s the promise of more festive fireworks that has TOWIE’s loyal audience most excited.
One fan tweeted after the news broke:
“The TOWIE Christmas special is the BEST part of the year. Cannot wait to see who flips the table this time!”
ITV2 is yet to confirm an exact air date for the Christmas episode, but it’s expected to follow shortly after the conclusion of the main series in December.
Whether it’s reconciliations, new romances, or bitter rows, one thing’s for sure: Christmas in Essex will be anything but silent.
