A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after sustaining multiple injuries in a serious karting accident in southern Tenerife on Sunday night. The incident occurred at around 8:00pm in Las Eras, a locality in the municipality of Arico.
Emergency services responded swiftly following a distress call, deploying Local Police, the Guardia Civil, and two ambulances from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC).
On arrival, medical staff treated the teenager at the scene for multiple injuries, and after stabilising him, transferred him in a medicalised ambulance to the Candelaria University Hospital, where he was admitted in a critical condition.
Local Police assisted paramedics during the emergency response, and the Guardia Civil has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident. The exact cause has not yet been disclosed.
This incident has revived painful memories of a previous karting tragedy on the island inn December 2017, when 33-year-old British holidaymaker Kelly Slater died in a crash at a karting circuit near Playa de Las Américas.
She had reportedly been filming herself while driving a go-kart at approximately 48 km/h when she lost control on a bend. Her kart broke through a stack of tyres and fell down a ravine.
An inquest into the accident highlighted serious safety failings, including the lack of a seatbelt, an ill-fitting helmet, and the absence of a proper safety briefing. Her mother later publicly condemned the lack of safety oversight and support from local authorities.
