The world of darts has seen its fair share of outrageous walk-on songs, eccentric outfits, and unforgettable nicknames, but this time, one player’s moniker has been deemed a little too risqué for the biggest stage of all.
Australian darts star Tim Pusey, who recently qualified for the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace (Ally Pally), has been told he cannot use his long-standing nickname, “The Magnet,” due to its unintended, and rather suggestive, connotations when paired with his surname.
On the surface, “The Magnet” might sound like a harmless, even fun, nickname for a darts player known for attracting the crowd’s attention. However, when you say it out loud, “Tim Pusey, The Magnet”, it’s easy to see why the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) may have raised an eyebrow.
Speaking to Tungsten Tales, Pusey admitted he’d been forced to leave his cheeky nickname behind for the tournament:
“I don’t have any of that on my shirt. I’ll have to find a new one and maybe we’ll have to put it to a poll and get something.”
He added with a laugh:
“It’s hard because anything can be turned. At the moment, I don’t have any nickname and the chants can be colourful.”
Known for his easy-going personality and sense of humour, Pusey seems to be taking the whole situation in stride. He’s even inviting fans to help choose a replacement moniker ahead of his debut at the World Championships this December, and given darts fans’ creativity, that could be risky business on its own.
While the PDC hasn’t issued an official statement on the matter, insiders say the organisation has been tightening its standards around nicknames and walk-on branding, especially for global TV broadcasts. The goal, reportedly, is to maintain a level of professionalism and ensure the sport remains accessible to family audiences.
That said, darts has always been known for its fun-loving and slightly mischievous spirit, and fans on social media are already joking that banning “The Magnet” might be a bit over the top. One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“Come on, it’s darts! We’ve had nicknames like The Power, Snakebite, and The Ferret, surely The Magnet isn’t that bad!”
Another chimed in:
“Let him keep it! The crowd chants would’ve been legendary.”
Pusey, 29, is one of Australia’s rising stars in the sport, having competed on the international circuit for several years. Qualifying for the World Darts Championship, held annually at London’s iconic Alexandra Palace, marks a huge milestone in his career.
Despite losing his nickname, Pusey remains upbeat:
“It’s all a bit of fun,” he said. “At the end of the day, I’m just happy to be there representing Australia. If the fans want to help pick something new, I’m all for it.”
Now, darts fans are buzzing with suggestions for what Tim’s new nickname should be, with ideas ranging from Down Under Thunder to The Aussie Arrow. But whatever he chooses, Pusey’s light-hearted attitude and cheeky sense of humour have already made him a fan favourite heading into Ally Pally.
And who knows, maybe losing “The Magnet” will end up being the thing that helps him attract even more fans.
