Hotel and hospitality workers across the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife have started a two-day strike today with protests outside hotels, coinciding with the peak of the Easter holiday season.
The industrial action, scheduled for April 17th and 18th, affects approximately 80,000 hotel industry employees in Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro.
This move follows the rejection of the latest proposal from the employers' associations, despite mediation efforts by the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.
The proposed agreement included a 6% salary increase, the implementation of adjustable beds, and the establishment of a negotiation table before April 30th to address other labour concerns. However, union representatives deemed the offer insufficient, leading to the continuation of the strike.
In contrast, the province of Las Palmas, encompassing Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, averted the strike after reaching an agreement that provides workers with a €650 bonus and a 9% salary increase over 12 months.
The Canary Islands government has mandated minimum service levels ranging from 15% to 25% in essential areas such as reception, cleaning, maintenance, and food services. Nonetheless, unions have criticised these measures, arguing that they infringe upon the fundamental right to strike.
As Tenerife experiences high tourist occupancy during the Easter period, the strike poses significant challenges to the hospitality sector. Union leaders have expressed willingness to resume negotiations, urging employers to present a more favourable offer to resolve the dispute.
Travelers visiting Tenerife during this period are advised to anticipate potential disruptions in hotel services and to stay informed about ongoing developments.
