It’s the latest chapter in the sunbed wars — and this time, it’s truly next level. Tourists in Tenerife have been caught trying to reserve before they are even put out, by laying their towels and bags directly on the floor in front of the hotel pool at the crack of dawn to ‘reserve the space’.
In a scene described by fellow holidaymakers as “surreal”, guests at several popular resorts have been spotted creeping out early to stake their claim by placing towels, flip-flops and beach bags on the ground in a bid to secure prime tanning spots before hotel staff have even started putting out the sunbeds.
The bold tactic has sparked outrage among more relaxed holidaymakers, with many branding it “selfish”, “ridiculous” and “the final straw” in the long-running battle for sunbed supremacy.
Photos and videos of the bizarre phenomenon have quickly made their way to social media, drawing thousands of comments. “It’s like a military operation out there,” wrote one user. “People are literally reserving tiles.”
Some hotels have been forced to step in, reinforcing rules that ban guests from reserving sunbeds they’re not using, while others are said to be reviewing policies altogether as tension around the pool is escalating.
Etiquette experts have weighed in, urging tourists to remember they’re on holiday, not competing in a turf war. “There’s nothing wrong with wanting a good spot,” one said. “But laying claim to empty floor space is a step too far.”
With peak season approaching, Tenerife’s sunbed saga looks set to continue — and if the latest trend is anything to go by, guests might need to set their alarms even earlier to win the morning battle for the best spot by the pool.
